                              A Cameraless Photographer?

Belive it or not photography can be done without a camera! All you need is an enlarger, some light sensitive paper and the objects in which you want to capture. You guessed it.. Photograms!

There are many photographers who use photograms instead of a camera because of the different style in which it shows. Use this image below as an example:

This particular photo was created by a Photographer named Man Ray. I chose this photo as an example because of how simple yet effective it is. Man Ray often took images with a surreal mindset, surreal meaning the opposite of reality. Photograms invert the original object so the surrealism is bought to this image because of how it looks, inverted, Because of this you can see things inside the bulb that you wouldnt normally see and it has blocked out the bottom half of the bulb because it is opaque. The large amount of negative space in the image highlights the simplicity of the object, in this case a lightbulb.

Some more information on Man Ray;
Ray was born on August 27th in 1890 and died on November 18th 1976, He was an American visual artist but mainly worked in France.Despite his informal reach Ray was a huge contributor to the surrealist movement. He was a fashion and portrait photographer and called his photograms "Rayograms"! interestingly as an artist Ray refused to use his real name, Emmanuel Radnitzky, and insited that he will only be known as Man Ray. Ray was known for his 19th century style paintings but abandoned this to get involved in the movement "Dada" when living in New York. This eventually evolved into his passion for surrealistic photography.

Many of Rays photograms use ordinary objects but closely pact to add the surreal effect, the inverted outcome can also help alter the image. some more examples of his photograms are:

A Famous Image
This image by Henri can be seen as an eire and moody composition. this is because he has used
monochrome contrasts and a minimal main focus, the photo was taken with a faster shutter speed and

This froze the man as he makes his decision to jump. this freeze frame also adds tension to anyone who sees the composition. Henri used a high aperture for this photo so everything from the foreground to the background is in focus this also adds to the moody atmosphere because it shows the graveyard in the background and the ominous people surrounding.
The photo has a spooky and tense atmosphere due to the surroundings of the photo.

Koyaanisqatsi
Koyaanisqatsi (also known as life out of balance)  is a film using only slow motion, time-lapses and hyper-lapses, directed by Godfery Reggio and cinematography (time-lapses and hyper-lapses) by Ron Fricke.

This movie is a perfect place to gain inspiration for anyone wanting to try a form of cinematography because it shows so many different locations, speeds, perspectives and focus points. it contains mostly time lapses of cities and landscapes from the united states, its designed to juxtapose the music with the photography. strangely enough the film has no words involved so the viewer can focus fully on the amazing photography its based on.
Many photographers have a main focus in which they are best at for example linking to this movie a photographer named Sam Taylor Johnson focuses in still life. In 2001 sam focussed on a bowl of fruit for weeks in order to show the process of it decaying. this was created by taking a photo every day for a couple weeks in order to show the real effect of time.

Stop Motion

Stop motion is created by a burst of images (a collection of 10-100+) layered in photoshop to show a narrative or a small film by flipping through the photos.
people mainly use stop motion to show the process of time, for example my class have been set the task of showing decay.

sStop motion can be used in film or in music videos, for example an artist i know (MAX) created his music video for a song called lights down low and used the stop motion to show time passing in their relationship. they did this by taking a photo everyday from the perspective of the lightbulb above the bed. However they obviously didn't have time to produce a photo every day for a music video so they used the illusion of time passing with the help of change in lighting and makeup to add age to the actors.

Stop motion was also used to create well known movies, for example Wallace and Gromit was created using clay models and stop motion. each movie would take at least a year to film!

However it does not have to be this complicated, stop motion can be much simpler like showing the melting of ice or a decaying flower and this can easily be done by taking timed photos eg, every 10 minutes to a photo daily.

Pinhole Lumen Experiment
In class we created pinhole cameras with energy drink cans,we did this by using felt and a compass to cut a hole in the can and the felt to block out any light from escaping onto the ligh sensitive pper inside.
We first started the practical work with drawing circles with a template and a white crayon to make sure it will fit inside and on top of the cans to block out all light.
once all was cut out we placed the middle sized piece of felt inside the can and the larger one on top with a hot glue gun. this was done by a teacher however because no one trusts us with hot glue, understandable. however before the top piece of felt was put on we placed a piece of light sensitive paper inside the can to make sure the camera will work properly. before w did this we cut a hole in the can with a pair of compasses so the light ca get in when needed but we put  piece of taper over the hole so the light sensitive paper wasn't exposed too early.
to fit everything in the can we drained them and cut the top off with a scalpel and sanded the sharp edges so it was less dangerous to handle.
finally the last step was to carefully take the cans home and pin them up so they can capture the travels of the sun over a few months. i put mine on my window because it has a good view of the sun.
